Steel is the product of iron plus fire. Soil is rock plus heat and the crushing of glaciers.
Linen is flax plus the water that cleans it, the comb that separates it, the flail that pounds it, and the shuttle that weaves it. In the same way, the development of human character requires a plus attached to
it, for great character is made not through luxurious living but through suffering.
And the world does not forget people of great character.
I read all the time in devotionals about the building of character and I frequent this topic often in my bible as well. But walking through it, instead of reading it is a whole different story isn't it.
I tend not to be such a willing sport when I am the one being used as the example.
You might just hear me grunting, moaning, complaining. Not really the stellar Christian example.
But then maybe that is the thing I need to remember.
That as we grow and change and weather different seasons there is no particular perfect way as to how that is supposed to look.
I was reminded of this last week when I was having just a terrible day.
Do you ever really want to do something but then when you do it you are awful at it?
That is what has been happening to me lately with my Horse.
When I have been trying to walk and exercise my horse I have been fearful.
My horse is huge he towers over me at 17 hands, and when he walks well lets just say he is still learning how to walk nicely. Being a rescue horse it has been awhile since he has worked on his ground manners. And sometimes he can unintentionally get in your space.
Unfortunately when he scares me then I scare him and well it ends up just being comical watching the both of us. I am jumpy and then he is jumpy. He wants to run away and I want to climb a tree. All while I am holding onto this rope attaching the both of us.
He is trusting me to keep him safe and lead him. And instead his leader is nervous and jumpy. Can you imagine being attached by a rope to someone who is acting that way.
I got so frustrated the other day I just came home and cried.
It is funny sometimes in life the things we dream of don't exactly turn out exactly how we have dreamed.
Building character, learning about ourselves it often looks a lot different than we imagine.
Have you ever acted completely opposite in a situation than you imagined you would?
Thankfully I have been blessed to have some very supportive people around me who remind me that being who we want to be or who we aspire to be takes a long time. It doesn't happen in the wink of an eye. But with patience and perseverance and by the grace of God, day by day we can get closer to what we inspire to be.
So let me share my inspiration this week...
Life lived learns character, and the greatest of trials builds the greatest
of character. So while we would never wish unnecessary trials unto ourselves.
May God bless us this season to use the trials we have to build us into someone of Great Character leaving a legacy of someone not forgotten. Rich in Faith, Grace and the Mercy of God.
and as I hold onto that lead rope of my horse and he looks to me to be a strong and confident, it makes me so thankful that God hangs onto the lead rope attached to me!!
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial,
because when he has stood the test, he will receive the
crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
